Disney+’s ‘What If…?’ Season Three Teaser Reveals Russian Super-Soldier Team-Up

As viewers still recover from the season two finale, Marvel Studios has already released a sneak peek at the next chapter in the Disney+ What If…? series. According to Comicbook, a teaser trailer for the third season dropped on the internet this past Saturday. The clip features an alternate universe where Bucky Barnes’ Winter Soldier and the Soviet Union’s Red Guardian are on the run. View the full clip below.

In the clip, the odd pair is driving to their destination when they’re pulled over by a police blockade. After conflicting stories, the duo’s cover is blown and they attempt to evade the authorities. Red Guardian would rather leave the police unscathed, but Winter Soldier is focused on eliminating the targets permanently.

As Marvel Cinematic Universe lore tells it, a team-up between Russia’s two super soldiers has not previously occurred. Red Guardian, who was the Soviets’ answer to Captain America, was scapegoated and imprisoned by his government. David Harbour (Stranger Things, We Have A Ghost) portrayed the hero in the MCU film Black Widow. As far as Bucky is concerned, we know he continued as one of the world’s deadliest assassins, eventually crossing paths with his old pal Steve Rogers, and further undergoing deprogramming to become an ally to the Avengers. Sebastian Stan (Pam and Tommy, Captain America: Civil War) plays the character on screen and recently reprised the role in episode two, “What If…Peter Quill Attacked Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

Season two of What If…? premiered Dec. 22 releasing one of its nine episodes each day through Dec. 30. In addition to brand new stories including MCU favorites like Happy Hogan, Hela, and Nebula, the series delivered few continuations from season one with a twist. Hayley Atwell’s (Captain America, Marvel’s Agent Carter) Captain Carter returned in three interlocking narratives: “What If…Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?,” What If…The Avengers Assembled in 1602?,” and the season finale “What If…Strange Supreme Intervened?”  The season finale saw Carter team up with a brand new Marvel character, Kahhori, an Indigenous woman whose powers were born from the Tesseract.

While there’s no timetable for the release of What If…?’s third season, seasons one and two are available on Disney+.
