Disney+’s ‘The Mandalorian’ Set to Receive Its Own Manga

A Disney+ series set in a galaxy far, far away is being adapted for a new medium. Comicbook reports the Star Wars original series, The Mandalorian, is getting its own manga. The adaptation will be published by Big Gangan, the well-known publisher responsible for gaming giant Square Enix’s manga.

For those unfamiliar with the term, manga refers to comics or graphic novels from Japan that span back to the late 19th century. While the word literally refers to comics or cartooning, outside of the country its unique black-and-white art form is mostly associated with comics from the native land. Manga is read by consumers of all ages and comes in many different genres. From fantasy and romance to business commerce and history.

This won’t be the first time the original character has appeared in comics. According to Comicbook, Marvel announced a comic series based on the TV show earlier this year. Set to release in June, the series will be written by Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia, Marvel’s Runaways) with art by Georges Jeanty (Age of X-Man: X-Tremists, Gambit: House of Cards). They will take season one’s first eight episodes as the basis for the series’ run.

The last time viewers saw the lone bounty hunter, he was reunited with some familiar faces in Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett. With that season complete, fans can await Pedro Pascal’s (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Last of Us) return as Din Djarin in the third season of The Mandalorian. While no release date has been announced, the third season has been in production since last year. Many details have remained under wraps. However, we do know veteran actor Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, The Addams Family) has joined the cast for the upcoming season.

The first chapter of The Mandalorian manga is set to drop on May 25th, two days before Disney+ premieres the upcoming series Obi-Wan Kenobi
