Marvel’s upcoming project for Disney+, Armor Wars, has hired its head writer, initializing its development and solidifying its place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Comicbook. Comedian turned screenwriter Yassir Lester (Making History) will take on the job of the writer.
Cheadle and Lester will reunite from their time spent collaborating on Showtime’s Black Monday, which the former has received two Emmy nominations for. Armor Wars will star Don Cheadle (Iron Man) and begs the question: “What happens if Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands?” With the downfall of Robert Downey Jr.’s (Sherlock Holmes) Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, his close friend, James Rhodes, based on War Machine in the comics and played by Cheadle, will be left to pick up the pieces.
“It’s going to be interesting. We are just talking about what the show is going to be,” Cheadle previously said in a statement. “We probably will start filming sometime next year and are just cracking the story right now. Deciding what that journey [is] going to look like, what the iteration of this is going to be. Obviously, if people know Armor Wars [from the comics] they know what the series is about. But it’s also figuring out how to establish and dig really deep into who Rhodey is because we haven’t really seen a lot of that in the movies,” via Comicbook.
Alongside Armor Wars, Marvel Studios currently has several projects in development for Disney+, including Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Light, which are all filming. Ironheart, also related to Iron Man’s storyline, will focus on Marvel hero Riri Williams, played by Dominque Thorne (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), who will make her debut in 2022 with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ironheart is also currently in developmental stages. Disney+ has not yet revealed a premiere date or info about Armor Wars.
