American Born Chinese, the Disney+ fantasy series, was canceled by the network, Deadline reports. This has happened right after the first season was released seven months ago. The series starred actor Ke Huy Quan (Loki, Goonies) and actress Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians, Haunting in Venice).
According to Deadline, a few reasons behind this sudden cancellation could be that the contracts of the cast from the show expired last night, and 20th Television is planning to bring the rights of the show to another network rather than Disney+.
The American Born Chinese story was based on Gene Luen Yang’s (Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, Dragon Hoops) graphic novel that has the same name. The series itself was created by Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers, Grandma’s Boy), via Deadline. This show was released at the culminant moment of 2023 since both Yeoh and Quan won Oscars for their performances in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Furthermore, this series got great reviews for both Yeoh and Quan’s fantastic performances. American Born Chinese did not gather a large enough audience to ensure the series’ renewal from the network. Other shows on Disney+, like Goosebumps, the second season of The Santa Clauses and the record-breaking Percy Jackson and the Olimpians, which was just crowned as the top Disney Branded Television Premiere of all time.
American Born Chinese speaks about the story of Jin Wang, who is played by Ben Wang (Walter and France, Search Party, MacGyver), a normal Chinese-American teenager that has the same problems as anyone at that age could…fitting in the American high school society, going through his suburban home life. But when he meets a new student on the first day of the new semester, Jin is pulled in a world of Chinese mythological gods (not by will), who are at battle with each other and he has to find a way to fix this mess.
The cast of American Born Chinese includes, according to Deadline, Yeoh as Guanyin, Quan as Freddy Wong, Jimmy Liu (The Farewell, Ip Man 4: The Finale) as Wei-Chen, Daniel Wu (Reminiscence, Caught in Time) as Sun Wukong (named “The Monkey King”), Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic: Mystery City, Splitting Up Together) as Amelia, Chin Han (Mortal Kombat, Skyscraper) as Simon Wang and Yeo Yann (Wet Season, Rise Of the Legend) Yann as Christine Wang. This season’s guest star is Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Stephanie Hsu (Joy Ride, The Fall Guy)
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Just Mercy) directed the first and finale episodes of the series. The executive producer for this show was also Cretton, alongside Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: The Next Level, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story), Melvin Mar (Prom Pact, Bad Teacher), Erin O’Malley (New Girl, The Crossover), and Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12, Green Room). Another person who served as executive producer was Yang. Yu was an executive producer yet the showrunner, via Deadline.
American Born Chinese is now streaming on Disney+.
