It has been only a week since the end of Marvel Studios and Disney+’s acclaimed series Agatha All Along. Yet, fans are still theorizing, and series showrunner Jac Schaeffer (Wandavision, Black Widow) is too. One of the series’ characters is being given many fan theories, which was barely introduced in the finale episode, and it’s Nicholas Scratch, Agatha’s son. The finale gave fans a glimpse of the past of Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn (Wandavision, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days), and what happened at Nicky’s birth. But they never confirmed who the father of the boy truly is. But now, in an interview with Backstory Magazine via ComicBookMovie, Schaeffer subtly has confirmed, which makes fans happy, that Nicky’s father is none other than Rio Vidal/Death, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza (Criminal Minds, Parks & Recreation), Comicbook.com reports.
“I will say that when we were casting sometimes, we were like, ‘Does that kid look like Rio? Does that kid look like Plaza?’” Schaeffer explained via Comicbook.com. “Fans and viewers, yes, are picking up on our brainwaves for sure.”
The brainwaves that Schaeffer is speaking about, according to Comicbook.com, are the fan theories he has probably seen circulating on social media after the finale, which showed Rio’s curious appearance right before the birth of Agatha’s son. In that scene, Agatha explains that the baby was made “from scratch,” and she did not “cast a spell.” Furthermore, before the child’s passing, the boy stopped killing people, stating that his “mother needed him home,” and when Death came to grab Nicky, she told him to kiss his mother goodbye two times as they walked away holding hands. Schaeffer shared his thoughts on how fans were ecstatic after seeing that scene and hopes that this storyline could be explored more in the future.
“I didn’t anticipate that the shippers would be so fervent,” Schaeffer continued via Comicbook.com. “You never know how anything is going to land or if people are going to care. The amount of people that care is staggering to me. It’s my hope that in the MCU there’s more unpacking of the Agatha & Rio backstory.”
Furthermore, according to Comicbook.com, in a previous interview with Variety, Schaeffer explained how the writers were able to show Agatha and Rio’s backstory – including the possibility that Rio might be the father of the child – but was not able to show all of it, so many things are left unsaid.
“That’s a story for another day, but ultimately for me, it’s irrelevant in this story,” Schaeffer added via Comicbook.com. “The truth is that even if I did have an answer, I don’t cover it in this property. So, it is fodder for another story for another day, that I maybe don’t have control over.”
Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+.
