Disney+ and Marvel Studios’ Agatha All Along has mentioned a famous Marvel Comics character in the third episode, named Mephisto, and show director Jac Schaeffer (Black Widow, Timer) addressed the mayhem that name drop caused in the MCU fandom, Comicbook.com reports. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schaeffer shared his thoughts on the new MCU speculation.
“With these shows, so often there is something that is at once a joke and a wink and a nod, and actually has something legitimate underneath it,” Schaeffer explained via Comicbook.com. “As we all know, Mephisto is a character who’s very wrapped into Agatha’s storyline. I mean, people have to watch, but we’re always playing with the audience in that way.”
According to Comicbook.com, the character of Mephisto is one that fans of the original Marvel Comics have been waiting for an introduction in the MCU for decades. During WandaVision, there were fan theories that the demon villain would appear in the show sometime before the last episode, but it never did. Now, there was finally a mention in Agatha All Along‘s most recent episode. In the X (formerly Twitter) post embedded below, a fan shared the moment in the third episode where Mephisto was mentioned.

There seem to be five fan theories surrounding the newest Marvel series during these past two weeks. According to Comicbook.com, the first theory is whether Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is truly coming back since many mentions and clues point in that direction. Another one is that fans suspect that the character of Joe Locke’s (Heartstopper) “Teen” is Billy Kaplan, better known as Wiccan. The third one is that everyone wants to know who Rio Vidal, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza (Criminal Minds, Parks and Recreation), truly is. The fourth one is fans guessing what Agatha truly wants at the end of the clan’s journey through The Witches’ Road. The last one is whether Mephisto will be introduced in this series or the MCU sooner rather than later.
According to Comicbook.com, Wandavision was the last time fans saw the Scarlet Witch. Fans are hoping that, after all the mentions in the first two episodes of Agatha All Along, Wanda Maximoff will return in the upcoming Marvel movies Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Schaeffer had to say his thoughts on those speculations, teasing more of what’s to come for the character of Agatha Harkness.
“There was a lot of consideration. That’s a great way of articulating it: her shadow. Agatha is not a character who’s going to stand in anyone’s shadow. So this is emphatically Agatha Harkness’ show,” Schaeffer shared via Comicbook.com. “However, we are in the WandaVision corner of the universe, so Wanda’s legacy has threads in this narrative. But, yeah, it is about Agatha. It’s about her journey, it’s about the truth of her, and that is very much our focus with the show.”
Agatha All Along releases one new episode each Wednesday at 6 PM PT/ 9 PM EST on Disney+.
