Disney+ original series Mosquito is set to feature English pair Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu, Juror #2) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters, On Swift Horses), Deadline reports. The streamer ordered six episodes of the series from Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara (Poor Things, The Favourite) which is described as dark comedy with a cynical take on a young couple’s relationship and will stream on Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the U.S.

This is familiar territory for the trio, who worked on two breakout shows on Hulu in 2020. Hoult starred in the McNamara-created dramedy The Great, which had a three season run, while Edgar-Jones starred in Normal People with Paul Mescal, according to Deadline. Both series received acclaim from viewers and critics, and earned Hoult and Edgar-Jones Golden Globe nominations for their performances, while McNamara scored a nomination for Best TV Series in the musical or comedy category. Hoult, his co-star Elle Fanning (Predator: Badlands, A Complete Unknown), and McNamara also earned Emmy nominations for The Great.

Mosquito, much like The Great, will feature the absurdist satire that McNamara is known for while examining the tribulations of a young couple. According to an official synopsis provided by Deadline, the series centers on Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Ed (Hoult), a recently married couple whose secrets begin to reveal as daily life chips away at the personas they present… all started by an intrusive mosquito.

“I’m thrilled and excited to work with and team up two of the best actors around,” said McNamara, who will write and executive produce the series, via Deadline. “I can’t wait to go make absurd comedy with them.”

Alongside McNamara, Hoult, Edgar-Jones, Marian Macgowan, Tracy Underwood, and Daniel Pipski will executive produce the series. Production begins in 2026, per Deadline.

“Tony is one of the most talented writers working in film and television today, with a legacy of incredible success at Disney,” President of Disney Television Studios Eric Schrier and Disney+ Head of Content EMEA Angela Jain said in a joint statement via Deadline.

Notably, McNamara has released works exclusively for Disney-owned companies over the past seven years including The Great for Hulu, The FavouritePoor Things, and The Roses for Searchlight, and Cruella for Walt Disney Pictures, according to Deadline.

“He has an unmatched ability to bring fascinating and complex stories to life weaving sharply written, intricate dialogue with signature dark-humor and complexity,” Schrier and Jain continued. “Partnering with him on Mosquito is an incredible step forward for our local original content and reinforces our ambitions in the UK.”

Per Deadline, Edgar-Jones will hit the big screen next year with Sense and Sensibility and will also star in A Place In Hell with Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans, Manchester by the Sea) and Here Comes the Flood with Denzel Washington (Gladiator II, Malcom X), both of which are in development.

Meanwhile Hoult, who is fresh off of his Superman Lex Luthor portrayal, will appear in David Leitch’s (The Fall Guy, Bullet TrainHow to Rob a Bank with Zoë Kravitz (Caught Stealing, The Batman), Anna Sawai (Pachinko, Shōgun), and Pete Davidson (Dumb Money, The King of Staten Island) next year, according to Deadline.
