Disney+ has revealed new Korean original dramas that will be added to the streamer, Deadline reports. There will be seven new Korean dramas, some of them including titles such as Blood Free, Unmasked, The Tyrant, and Gangnam B-Side. The most popular and most-awaited title is surely Blood Free, in which the main leads are famous Korean actor Ju Ji-hoon (Ransomed, Hyena, Kingdom) and actress Han Hyojoo (W: Two Worlds, Happiness, Moving). The storyline focuses on a security bodyguard who is haunted by his past mistakes. After investigating as many paths as possible, he is recruited by the CEO of a controversial company that specializes in producing meat. Furthermore, this CEO in question is a survivor of an attack that messed up the life of the bodyguard.
According to Deadline, the drama Unmasked’s main lead is Kim Hyesoo (Smugglers, Juvenile Justice, Hyena), and it focuses on a group of investigative journalists team that is trying to get their career back after the mistake of publishing a story that was deemed controversial. The team, in a last desperate attempt at saving their careers, are given a crime story of a 20-year-old case that turned cold. The case revolves around a famous actor who was kidnapped with no way to be found.
The Korean drama The Tyrant, according to Deadline, focuses on a political story, precisely how the American government is trying to recover a virus bacteria, deemed to be deadly for humanity, from the hands of the South Korean government. This other title, Gangnam B-Side, focuses on a detective who returns to his old roots after leaving the investigative field for a long time because the daughter of a close friend has disappeared without a trace.
The streamer has renewed other popular shows also, such as variety series The Zone: Survival Mission. Starring Yoo Jaesuk (Sixth Sense, Busted, Running Man), Kwon Yuri (Good Job, Fashion King, Local Hero), and popular hosts Kim Donghyun (All The Butlers, Where Is Mr. Kim, The Return of Superman), who is a current UFC fighter, and a rising Youtube Creator named Dex, the unlikely group has to face many difficult challenges.
Another popular show renewed, according to Deadline, is Light Shop which stars Park Boyung (Strong Woman Do Bong soon, Doom at Your Service, Oh My Ghost), Jihoon, Bae Seongwoo (Delayed Justice, The King, Veteran) and Lee Jungeun (Our Blues, Juvenile Justice, Parasite). The story focuses on various individuals that struggle with their most traumatic event in life, and they come together to help each other.
Last important title is Uncle Samsik, which stars Byun Yohan (On the Line, Mr. Sunshine, Misaeng) and Song Kang-ho (Parasite, Memories of Murder, Detective Park Doo-man). This drama focuses on a two policitians of 1960s Korea that have different ideals but come together as a team to transform a Korea into a thriving country.
Carol Choi, Disney’s Executive Vice President of original content strategy in the APAC regions, has stated the reason why Disney+ has added more Korean Drama content to its catalog. According to Deadline, Choi said, “The new Korean originals announced today really builds on the positive momentum and success of our APAC content slate last year. We will continue to scale our creative ambition with a curated collection of APAC originals, centered on quality storytelling and top talent, in collaboration with the region’s most exciting storytellers.”
As stated beforehand, all of these Korean titles are expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
