Disney+ Reveals Its Lineup of Non-Scripted Shows Coming Soon

Disney+ has just unveiled its new slate of unscripted and reality TV shows coming to the new streaming service. The four new shows include The Quest, The Maze, Meet the Chimps, and an untitled series about Pixar Studios.

The upcoming reality game show The Quest will be a reboot of the 2014 ABC series of the same name. The Quest is a fantasy-themed show with an overarching story set in the fictional kingdom of Everealm, but features real competition elements and unscripted reactions from the contestants. Like the 2014 series, which ran for a single season, the reboot will be filmed just outside Vienna, Austria. The show’s original producers will be coming back to work on the reboot, including Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri of The Amazing Race, Mark Ordesky of Lord of the Rings, Jane Fleming of Reality High, and David Collins, Michael Williams, and Rob Eric of Queer Eye

The Quest reboot will have a few differences from the original series, the primary one being the age of the contestants. Van Munster explained that “the original show got a tremendous reaction from teenage viewers,” which lead to the production team deciding to cast teenagers for the new series. The casting for the new season of The Quest is already underway.

Van Munster and Doganieri are also producing the new reality series The Maze for Disney+ alongside Mark Dziak. The Maze is also an adventure competition show that pairs one teen and one adult relative together to solve puzzles and complete challenges on their journey through a fairy-tale Europe. Each season will end with the teams converging on a final location to complete the ultimate challenge.

Also in the Disney+ non-scripted lineup is the wildlife docu-series Meet the Chimps, produced by Justine Kershaw and Michael Welsh and directed by Virginia Quinn. The six-part series will follow the day-to-day lives of a group of rescued chimpanzees living on a wildlife sanctuary in Louisiana. The sanctuary, Chimp Haven, is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and is home to more than 300 chimpanzees.

Finally, Disney+ will be bringing a new Pixar documentary to the streaming platform produced by Brian McGinn, Jason Sterman and David Gelb. The series will follow a group of Pixar employees participating in the Pixar SparkShorts program, which allows the creators to make their own short films.

Disney+ Senior Vice President of Content Agnes Chu gave a statement regarding the new lineup of unscripted series. “We are thrilled that we get to bring the groundbreaking The Quest back to life, and can’t wait for people to discover The Maze, our special subjects in Meet the Chimps and the innovation and wonder of making Pixar’s Sparkshorts.” Release dates for the new series have yet to be announced.
