According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney+ has renewed the Lucasfilm animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions for a third season. This renewal was announced during the first day of Disney’s two-day Content Showcase event in Singapore. There is no official date for the third season but the new instalment will air sometime in 2025.
The series will return to Japan with 9 new shorts from Japanese anime studios. The Japanese studios involved include David Production, Kamikaze Douga+ ANIMA, Kinema Citrus, Polygon Pictures, Production I.G, Project Studio Q, TRIGGER, and WIT Studio.
Star Wars: Visions is an animated anthology series with two current volumes that feature nine episodes each. The series’ stories take place in different eras and alternate realities of the Star Wars franchise. The stories tell different perspectives that focus on either Jedi, rebels, droids, a struggling family, a gang of misfits, and sith apprentices.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, when the series premiered in 2021, it featured a collection of non-canon animated shorts created by different Japanese animation studios and featuring different animation styles throughout the first and second volumes. This new take on an animated series by Lucasfilm led to a lack of restriction, leading to many interpretations of different Star Wars mythos, which was popular with fans and critics.
The first volume of the series aired with nine episodes on Disney+. It included works from different Japanese animation studios such as Kamikaze Douga, Studio Colorido, Geno Studio, Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Production I.G. and Science Saru.
Volume two aired back in 2023 and had the same treatment this time having works from an international group of studios. These studios included Aardman from the United Kingdom, El Guiri from Spain, Cartoon Saloon from Ireland, Punkrobot from Chile, Studio Mir South Korea, Studio La Cachette from France, 88 Pictures from India, D’art Shtajio from Japan along with Lucasfilm from United States, and Triggerfish from South Africa/Ireland.
Volumes one and two of Star Wars: Visions are available to stream on Disney+
