As the final night of the Emmys concluded, one media conglomerate came away with an astounding lead when it came to awards won. Disney came away with 36 awards at the Television Academy’s 76th ceremony, according to The Hollywood Reporter. HBO programs held these record-breaking numbers; however, after Shogun’s 14 Creative Arts Emmys before the actual ceremony, Disney proved its dominance.
Shogun and The Bear lead the FX-produced series that catapulted Disney to the most wins of the night. Both series consecutively set records for wins and a single year in both the drama and comedy categories – with Shogun receiving 18 and The Bear receiving 11. Even the FX series on its own would have beaten other media conglomerates with its 36 awards, but Disney ended up leaving the night with a total of 60 awards.
As for the other outcomes of the night, Netflix secured 24 wins during the Sunday ceremony and the Creative Arts Awards the week prior. The former powerhouse HBO/Max received 14 Emmys, the lowest number in a quarter of a century. Apple and NBC Universal also saw great numbers during the ceremony, receiving 10 Emmys each.
Although Shogun and The Bear left Sunday’s ceremony as two award powerhouses, many other Disney programs were well awarded; according to The Hollywood Reporter, “Disney+’s documentary Jim Henson Idea Man won five Emmys, the Oscars telecast landed four wins, and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and FX’s Welcome to Wrexham had three each. Hulu’s comedy How I Met Your Father, which was canceled after its second season, took home two awards, for multicamera cinematography and picture editing.”
The Hollywood Reporter entertains that HBO/Max’s off year at the Emmys is likely due to the release timing and last year‘s strikes. One instance is with Succession, one of their most awarded programs, ending last year. Their most critically acclaimed current running series, The Last of Us and The White Lotus, did not have any new episodes released during this Emmy year but should pick up in the following.
Disney and FX dominated at the 76th annual Emmy Awards with 60 awards in total, and they have Shogun and The Bear to thank.
