Disney+ has ordered a series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s (Sea of Monsters) best-selling book series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, according to a press release. The fantasy series follows Percy, a 12-year-old demigod who discovered that he possesses supernatural powers inherited from the god of the sea, Poseidon.
A film adaptation of the book series, starring Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) was released in 2010, followed by the sequel entitled Sea of Monsters, in 2013. The upcoming series adaptation will be executive produced by Jon Steinberg (Black Sails), Dan Shotz (Jericho), James Bobin (The Muppets), Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke (In Living Color), Monica Owusu-Breen (Lost), and Jim Rowe (Antlers).
“With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about, and we’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humor, surprise, and mystery,” said President of Disney Branded Television, Ayo Davis, via Variety.
“Bringing Rick Riordan’s brilliant Percy Jackson books to Disney Plus as a television series has been a mission for so many of us at this company as well as for Rick himself, and Jon, Dan, James, and the excellent team they have assembled have proven to be the perfect collaborators,” Karey Burke, President of 20th Television, said via Variety.
