Jon Bernthal (American Gigolo, The Bear) is returning to one of his most iconic characters. Sources from The Hollywood Reporter say that Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, one of Marvel’s most popular antiheroes. The Punisher will return in the new Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.
Bernthal will join Charlie Cox (Stardust, Kin) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Godfather of Harlem, The Kid) who are also reprising their roles as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively, from the Netflix version of Daredevil. According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming for the new show will start in New York this month. Fans of the show will be delighted to find out that the first season of Daredevil: Born Again will have eighteen episodes, unlike Marvel’s newest TV shows which usually consist of between six and nine episodes each. Chris Ord (Containment, Covert Affairs) and Matt Corman (The Enemy Within, The Brave) serve as both writers and executive producers for the show. Daredevil: Born Again is expected to premiere sometime in the spring of 2024.
The Punisher, played by Bernthal, first appeared in Netflix’s Daredevil during the show’s second season. After explaining his grieving father-turned-vigilante backstory, Frank Castle was given his own series on Netflix. The series, titled The Punisher, lasted for two seasons and had Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone, Seventh Son) starring opposite Bernthal.
The cast of the show includes Cox as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil; D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk also known as Kingpin; Margarita Levieva (The Deuce, In from the Cold); Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo, The Expanse); Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce, The Independent); and Nikki M. James (Spoiler Alert, Proven Innocent). Marvel hasn’t revealed any details regarding who most of the cast members are playing in the show but there are rumors that Levieva and Holt will be playing love interests for the two protagonists.
Daredevil follows Matt Murdock, a lawyer by day, and vigilante by night. With the help of his friends Karen and Foggy, played by Deborah Ann Woll (Children of Éarte, Deborah) and Elden Henson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Jobs) in the Netflix version, he defends Hell’s Kitchen both in the courts and in the streets. During his time as a vigilante, Matt has attempted to take down an organized crime web that has the citizens of Hell’s Kitchen fearing for their lives. It is in his attempt to take down this web that he discovers the man running it and his biggest enemy, Kingpin.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere in the spring of 2024 on Disney+. The original Daredevil show is available to stream on Netflix.
