Disney+ Announces Release Date for New Japanese Horror Series ‘Gannibal’

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney+ has just dropped the first trailer and declared a release date for the highly anticipated upcoming original Japanese horror series, Gannibal on December 28, 2022. The live-action adaptation is purportedly a psychological thriller based on the best-selling manga by Masaaaki Ninomiya.

As written by the Hollywood Reporter, the story of Gannibal is set in the fictional Japanese village of Kuge and follows freshly hired police rookie Daigo Agawa, played by Yuya Yagira (Asakusa Kid, The Fable). Although things start out promising for the naïve Agawa, a series of unfortunate and disastrous events soon befalls the young detective, eventually leading him to discover that something isn’t quite right about the quaint, little town of Kuge, including the people who live there.

The announcement of the series’ worldwide Disney+ release date was revealed last Wednesday at the Walt Disney Company’s annual content showcase in Singapore. The latest trailer for Gannibal was also featured at the showcase before subsequently being uploaded to YouTube.

The screen adaptation is directed by Shinzo Katayama (Missing, Siblings of the Cape) and features the acting talents of Shô Kasamatsu (Tokyo Vice, Love You as the World Ends) and Riho Yoshioka (Inherit the Stars, The Stars My Destination). Teruhisa Yamamoto (Drive My Car, We Couldn’t Become Adults) is slated to serve as a series producer, with Aiko Kuramoto (Last Letter, Motto Chouetsu Shita Tokore) serving as a production designer for at least one episode of the show.

According to Yamamoto, Gannibal is a tense thriller brimming with suspense that will have audiences on the edge of their seat each episode. Yamamoto also states that the series is a human story which reflects upon the conflict between family values and cultural tradition.

Gannibal will release on Wednesday, December 28 exclusively on Disney+. For those interested in learning more about the series, check out the latest trailer, featured below.
