Fresh off of yesterday’s casting announcement, Disney+ released the first full-length trailer to its upcoming Marvel series. Ms. Marvel starring newcomer Iman Vellani will come to the streaming platform on June 8. View the new trailer below.
Based on the comic of the same name, Ms. Marvel brings Marvel Comics’ first female lead Muslim superhero to live-action. Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City, New Jersey. Born to immigrant parents, the young teen who nerds out with the fanfic of her favorite superheroes – specifically Captain Marvel – struggles to blaze her own identity between two cultures. Her trek through adolescence becomes more complicated when she’s endowed with superpowers, cementing her own place as a local hero.
In the trailer, we get to finally witness the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s interpretation of Kamala’s powers. She appears to draw her powers from wristlets that allow her to create cosmic energy and matter out of thin air. She can also deliver larger-than-life punches to her foes. This differs from the comics, where Kamala discovers she is an Inhuman with the ability to manipulate her size and length, similar to that of the Fantastic Four’s Richard Reed.
According to Disney’s press release, Vellani is joined by co-stars Nimra Bucha (Sarmad Khoosat’s Manto), Yasmeen Fletcher (Andi Mack), Matt Lintz (Pixels), Aramis Knight (Into the Badlands), Saagar Shaikh (Remember Mike), Rish Shah (Strangers), Zenobia Shroff (The Big Sick), Mohan Kapur (Coffee Bloom), Laith Nakli (Ramy), Azhar Usman (Patriot), Travina Springer (The Mule), and Anjali Bhimani (Don’t Wake Mommy).
The series comes to Disney+ after long-standing delays. Originally set to begin production in 2020, the COVID pandemic pushed the series from an initial premiere window in 2021 to the second quarter of 2022. Ms. Marvel joins this month’s Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Marvel’s Halloween Special as shows slated to drop this year.
What won’t be dropping is an alleged Gamora and Nebula prequel series from Guardians of the Galaxy and Peacemaker director, James Gunn. According to Comicbook.com, the rumor arrived on Twitter over the weekend, forcing Gunn to hilariously tweet the so-called family drama series out of its misery.
Ms. Marvel creator Sana Amanat (Hawkeye) and Trevor Waterson (Deja Vu) serve as c0-executive producers for the series, with Bisha K. Ali (Four Weddings & A Funeral) as the head writer. Ali executive produces along with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Louis D’Espostio (Item 47), and Victoria Alonso (Spider-Man: No Way Home). Bad Boys For Life duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah share directing duties with filmmaker Meera Menon (Equity) and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Saving Face).
