Disney+ and Hulu’s The Artful Dodger has been renewed for season two, Deadline exclusively reports.
According to Deadline, main Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Maze Runner, Love Actually), who portrays the charming Jack Dawkins, David Thewlis (KAOS, Enola Holmes), who portrays Fagin, and Maia Mitchell (Teen Beach Movie, The Fosters), who portrays Lady Belle Fox, are all confirmed to return.
According to a statement shared with Deadline, the streamers state that the main leads will be joined by “several new faces in exciting cameos,” as the Australian and New Zealand newest cast members are currently a mystery.
According to Deadline, filming for the second season of The Artful Dodger will begin sometime in 2025 back at Callan Park in Sydney.
According to the statement shared with Deadline, the streamers share that, the series will pick up from where the “heart’s desires of Dodger, Fagin, and Lady Belle left off, promising more cunning thievery, snappy humor, life-and-death surgeries, and romance with a twist.”
Furthermore, according to Deadline, the series’ upcoming season is described by the streamer’s statement as, “an irreverent follow-up to Dickens ‘Oliver Twist’, exploring his adult double life in the far-flung penal colony of Port Victory, Australia.”
According to Deadline, Disney+ shared that The Artful Dodger was its strongest-performing Australian original. Also, the series was well-received internationally by critics and fans alike.
According to Deadline, The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Kylie Watson-Wheeler, shared another statement, saying that, “We’re thrilled to give our global audiences what they’ve been asking for, with a second season of The Artful Dodger set to start filming in 2025.”
“The return of our Australian-born Disney+ Original scripted drama, complete with all-star cast and brilliant crew, is a testament to the series’ high caliber of production and its local and international audience success,” Watson-Wheeler continued via Deadline. “We’re delighted this high-stakes romantic drama of heists, comedy, and beautifully complicated life and love, will thrill and entertain again.”
According to Deadline, the second season will once again be a Disney+/Hulu co-production along with Sony Pictures Television’s Curio Pictures. Jo Porter (Wentworth, Picnic at Hanging Rock) and Rachel Gardner (The Stranger, Firebite) from Curio will be the executive producers and producers, alongside series co-creator James McNamara (The New Legends of Monkey). Cameron Welsh (Constantine, The Last Ship) will continue being the series’ producer.
According to Deadline, writers will continue being Kate Mulvany (Hunters, The Twelve), Dan Knight (Irreverent, Spray), McNamara, and Miranda Tapsell (Summer Love, Big Mouth). Directors will be Ben Young (Extinction, Devil’s Peak) and Gracie Otto (Heartbreak High, Deadloch), alongside Jeffrey Walker (The Portable Door, The Clearing), who will be consulting. Other creators, along with McNamara, are David Maher (Bloom, Supernova) and David Taylor (Bloom, The Code).
