The newly-launched Disney+ has so far added a plethora of old and new titles to its nascent streaming service— many of them being apart of Marvel’s phase 3. The current roster is jam-packed with everything from nostalgic hits such as Cinderella and Pocahontas, as well as new projects such as the recent Avengers: Endgame.
Aside from being home to plenty of titles from Disney Channel, those who subscribe to the streaming service will also be able to watch Disney Channel Original Movies from their childhood as well. However, since its launch, Disney+ has been at the center of criticism for its lack of popular projects versus other fan favorites, leading many to publicly call out the company.
This includes The Weekenders, an animated series that originally aired in the early 2000s that followed a group of middle school aged friends who hung out every weekend. Due to recent fan backlash, Disney+ has officially confirmed the return the series which is set to return soon following a tweet from series star Jason Marsden.
“Amazing news,” the Disney+ Help account replied. “The Weekenders yr 1 and yr 2 (episodes 1-39) are scheduled to be added shortly. At the moment we don’t have an exact date, but please stay posted as we continue to expand. As Fairy Godmother always says ‘Even miracles take a little time'”
Although a great win for fans of the children’s series, Disney+ plans to only add the first two seasons— most likely in an attempt to satisfy audiences for now and to better gauge how many will actually tune in. During its initial run, The Weekenders ran for a total of 77 episodes over a span of four seasons, meaning only the first 39 episodes will be available through the streamer.
Other missing titles such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi and other Marvel films and series are locked into streaming deals with other services, meaning the company’s only option is to wait out contracts until the rights are up for grabs again. Other nostalgic television shows such as Cory in the House, for example, remain absent as well.
