Director Pablo Trapero Announces New El Estudio Series

Argentinian director Pablo Trapero will work with El Estudio on two new series, according to Variety. The planned projects include  a remake of his 2010 hit movie Carancho, as well as a biographical series called Galimberti. Based in Madrid, Mexico City, and Los Angeles, El Estudio is an independent TV production house created by Sony, which debuted at the  2020 Berlin Film Festival in February.

Galimberti depicts the life of Rodolfo Galimberti,  an Argentinian guerrilla in the 1970s. Involved in left-wing nationalist groups since he was 14, the activist kidnapped the heir to the biggest family fortune in the country and created the Marxist militarist organization Montoneros after being exiled during the Argentina dictatorship (1976-1983).

Variety added an El Estudio written statement depicting the show as “a disturbing protagonist of Argentine and Latin American politics down three decades of adventure, misery, betrayals and blood,” all while detailing drug empires.

Carancho will remake his 2010 film of the same name, but is unlikely to recast original duo Ricardo Garín (Sosa) and Martina Gusmán (Luján).The series is expected to be in English. While the exact plot has not been revealed yet, Carancho will depict a corrupted Bueno Aires drowning in crime in a dark, realist, documentary style.

Details regarding cast and release date are still unknown. To catch up with the original material, check out the trailer to Carancho here.
