According to Deadline, Diego Boneta (Luis Miguel: The Series, Father of the Bride) will reportedly play the lead in the recently approved bilingual series El Gato (w/t), which is based on Richard Dominguez’s (Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion, The Building of the Transcontinental Railroad) comic book series El Gato Negro. In Mexico, production is expected to start this spring. In 2019, Boneta was involved in an unsuccessful project called El Gato Negro: Nocturnal Warrior, which was based on the same comic book and produced by MGM Television and Mark Burnett (Shark Tank, Are You Smarter Than 5th Grader).
However, Frank’s sadness is short-lived as he discovers that his father was the 1970s masked vigilante named “El Gato,” his hideout sitting atop land connected to Frank’s inheritance. With crosshairs on his back, Frank must solve decades-old puzzles to survive, as well as discover the truth about his father’s involvement in a contemporary terror scheme.
The show will be showrunned and executive produced by Eric Carrasco (Foundation, Supergirl), who also co-created it with Turi Meyer and Alfredo Septién (Stargirl, Smallville).
In a statement, Carrasco said: “This is a pulp thriller, It’s a family drama, it’s everything I love about spies and masks and secret identities. A lot of us on this team – Diego, Andrew Mittman, Steve Stark and Carla Gonzalez Vargas, and I – have been at this for a long time now, and it’s a genuine thrill to finally make the show with MGM Television and Prime Video.”
Boneta said: “Sharing El Gato with audiences around the world is a dream come true, this has been a passion of mine since I started Three Amigos. Eric Carrasco and the entire team have built a character and universe that honors the superhero genre and still feels completely epic and original. It is an absolute honor to play Frank and produce this with my amazing partners at Amazon, MGM, and all other producers on this epic story. Get ready for a wild ride.”
Presently, Carrasco is working on the animated series Twilight of the Gods, which he co-created with Zack Snyder (Justice League, Man of Steel) and Jay Oliva (Deadpool, Thor: Ragnarok) for Netflix, in post-production. Before that, he wrote for Supergirl and Masters of the Universe: Revelation and served as co-executive producer on Foundation for Apple TV+.
Recently serving as writers and co-executive producers on Netflix’s limited series Griselda, Septien and Meyer have collaborated for a long time. According to Deadline, the duo worked on Midnight, Texas, Vampire Diaries, Witches of East End, and Salem as co-executive producers. Along with directing several episodes of Smallville, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Emmy-winning AMC series The Lot.
