Deadline reports Dexter: Original Sin concluded its season with a remarkable viewership spike, garnering 2.68 million global viewers on Paramount+ and Showtime. The finale saw a 27% increase in total viewers over the December premiere. “It was the most-streamed episode of the season,” according to Paramount Global, reflecting a 30% rise in streaming audience compared to the premiere.
The spinoff series, which focuses on Dexter Morgan’s Patrick Gibson (The OA, The Fosters) origin story, takes place in 1991 Miami. As Dexter transitions from student to avenging serial killer, he is guided by his father Christian Slater (True Romance, Mr. Robot) as Harry. Deadline notes that Dexter must balance his bloodthirsty urges with his forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department, all while adopting his father’s Code to eliminate undesirables without getting caught.
Despite its growth, Dexter: Original Sin has yet to appear on Nielsen’s streaming charts, with data only available through the week of January 13-19. Deadline points out that Nielsen’s reports are a month delayed, and the show’s strong streaming numbers should eventually appear. Paramount Global is optimistic that the show’s performance will continue to shine as more data becomes available.
The success of Dexter: Original Sin has far surpassed other recent Showtime series such as Yellowjackets and The Curse, Deadline reports. The show’s achievement comes at a time when Showtime has increasingly embraced streaming, following a broader shift in viewership trends since 2015. Dexter: Original Sin stands out in both engagement and audience retention, beating out some of the network’s most popular content.
The Dexter franchise will continue with Dexter: Resurrection, which will feature Michael C. Hall’s return as the infamous serial killer. Deadline confirms that the new season will also star David Zayas (Oz, The Good Wife) as Detective Angel Batista and Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) as Charley, continuing the twisted legacy of Dexter’s world.
