Break out your marshmallows, it’s almost time to return to Neptune for a brand new season of Veronica Mars. The original Veronica Mars show followed a teenage private detective who never missed the opportunity for a witty remark.
Veronica Mars is just like its titular character: it never quits. The original Veronica Mars aired its first three seasons on UPN, that later became the CW before season three. The show was cancelled at the end of season three in 2007 due to low ratings. What Veronica Mars fans lacked in numbers, they made up in passion. In 2013, the series creator, Rob Thomas, and star, Kristen Bell, started a crowdfunding campaign. Within thirty days, approximately six million dollars were raised. The film was released in 2014.
Even after completing the film, neither Thomas nor Bell were ready to say goodbye to the spunky detective. In 2018, it was announced that the show would return to Hulu. The streaming platform will release seasons one through three on July 1st. The new season four episodes will be released on July 26th.
At the ATX Television Festival, Thomas joined a few cast members to release details for the upcoming season. First, Hulu lets Veronica be more adult… to a certain extent. Thomas expected a TV-MA rating, but quickly had to do some rewrites when Hulu asked him to make the show fit a TV-14 rating so new viewers could easily transition from the old Veronica Mars episodes to the new ones.
Rob Thomas also hinted that Veronica will be at a crossroads in her life. Thomas elaborates, “Traditionally, there are lot of stories about men coming to this crossroads in their life where … the idea of family, a mortgage, kids is one direction and then freedom, irresponsibility, [and] ‘do whatever I want’ is the other direction. I was interested in putting Veronica at the crossroads.” Veronica will not have to face these decisions alone however. Veronica is currently in a relationship with on-again, off-again boyfriend Logan Echolls, played by Jason Dohring. While Veronica was usually pulling Logan out of hot water in the original series, Dohring says, “[It’s] totally flipped… He’s very put together and he’s almost helping Veronica through some things.”
Fans can expect plenty of familiar faces to be in the upcoming season, including Daran Norris (The Fairly Odd Parents) as Cliff McCormack, Max Greenfield (New Girl) as Deputy Leo, Ken Marino (Wanderlust) as Vinnie Van Lowe, and fan favorite Dick, played by Ryan Hansen (Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television).
Season four follows Veronica as she investigates a series of bombings during Spring Break, causing a threat to her hometown’s tourism industry. The story is loosely inspired by bomb scares in Austin, Texas, where series creator Rob Thomas lives.
