Netflix is shooting for the stars! A reboot of the nostalgic 1983 series Star Search has been confirmed to make a comeback since it’s ending in 1995. According to TVLine, the televised talent competition which originally was hosted by the late Ed McMahon (Concentration, The Winds of Whoopee) was announced on Wednesday at the annual Upfront presentation. In Netflix’s update, they perpetuated their excitement for the return of Star Search, highlighting how much unrecognized talent is looming at the moment.
“The talent is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the format is more interactive than ever,” Netflix said via TVLine.
Netflix also announced that the show will have ‘live-in’ voting for viewers, in determining which contestants will move forward in the live talent competition. Via TVLine, the reboot on Netflix will air episodes twice a week as the contest goes on.
The contestants will be able to audition in several categories; such as Music, Dance, Variety, Comedy, and Kids. Contestants will face weekly eliminations, as the contest comes down to the finale for who deserves their shot at stardom.
With the rich nostalgia Star Search has brought to its fans, many may remember how global icons such as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake got their start through Star Search, as well as some other famous faces such as Christina Aguilera, Adam Sandler (You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), Dave Chapelle (A Star is Born, Buddies), and many others. Via TVLine, the showrunner will be America’s Got Talent alum Jason Raff (Australia’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent) who appeared in the show for 19 seasons.
