Marc Cherry (Devious Maids, Why Women Kill), the creator of Desperate Housewives, has hinted at the possibility of revisiting Wisteria Lane in a new way. In a recent interview with People, Cherry shared his idea for a prequel to the beloved ABC series, which originally featured Teri Hatcher (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman), Felicity Huffman (American Crime), Marcia Cross (Everwood, Quantico) and Eva Longoria (Harsh Times) in leading roles.
According to Variety, Cherry explained, “I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade.” He continued, “Because the character I miss writing the most is actually Wisteria Lane. That was the most fun playground anyone in the history of television has ever had, because we owned the whole street. I know that street like the back of my hand. When someone shoots a commercial on that street, I know it instantly, because I know all those houses, I know the geography. It was such a fun place to write for. And there’s times when I go, ‘You know what? I wonder if I could write Wisteria Lane in like, 1966.’”
Cherry also addressed the continued interest in a reboot, joking that “about 70,000 people” have asked him about the possibility. While he has a few concepts in mind, he stressed that any new project would need a strong creative purpose. “If you do a reboot, you have to have a really good artistic reason to do it,” Cherry said. “And at some point, I’ll sit down with someone and go, ‘OK, let’s talk about if there’s a good enough ‘why’ to do it.’”
The original Desperate Housewives, which aired from 2004 to 2012, followed the lives of four women—Susan Mayer, played by Hatcher; Lynette Scavo, played by Huffman; Bree Van de Kamp, played by Cross; and Gabrielle Solis, played by Longoria—as they uncovered dark secrets in their suburban neighborhood. Narrated by the ghostly voice of their late friend Mary Alice Young, played by Brenda Strong (Supergirl, Unprisoned), the show was a massive hit, earning seven Primetime Emmys and three Golden Globes. Cherry remains intrigued by the potential to explore Wisteria Lane’s story in a fresh era.
