Channel 4’s Derry Girls is slated to end with its third season, according to Variety. Lisa McGee (The Deceived), the show’s screenwriter, announced news of the final season on Thursday via Twitter, stating that the season is heading into production.
The comedy is set in 1990s Northern Ireland and follows 16-year-old Erin Quinn, played by Saorise-Monica Jackson (Finding Home), as her and her friends grow up in a world full of political turmoil and bleak circumstances. According to McGee, the show’s plan was always to release a trio of seasons. “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. ‘Derry Girls’ is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly…very slowly…start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time,” McGee wrote. “‘Derry Girls’ is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved,” via Variety.
The show stars Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (6Degrees), Dylan Llewellyn (Frequences), and Louisa Harland (The Deceived) alongside Jackson. Derry Girls was already ordered by Channel 4, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show’s sophomore season premiered in March 2019 and gained international recognition after being released to Netflix.
