Two years after its premature cancellation, Terrance Arvelle Chisholm’s (Hooded: Or Being Black for Dummies, Clipped) Demascus will be available for viewers for the first time. Deadline reports that the series, formerly set for an AMC premiere in 2023, will receive new life at Tubi.
According to Deadline, the six-part series will stream on Tubi as an original series on August 7. The show was revived following a deal between AMC Networks and the Fox-owned streaming platform. AMC previously canceled the series ahead of its premiere due to budget cuts across the company.
“We’re excited to introduce audiences to Demascus — a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains. At Tubi, we champion stories that surprise, provoke, delight and resonate deeply with engaged fandoms, and Demascus is exactly the kind of original storytelling we’re proud to spotlight,” said Samuel Harowitz, SVP Content Acquisition and Partnerships at Tubi via Deadline.
The show’s cross of science fiction and comedy follows Okieriete Onaodowan’s (American Fiction, Station 19) 33-year-old Demascus on a self-reflective journey with the aid of new experimental technology. Joining Onaodowan is an impressive cast, including Janet Hubert (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Sweet Magnolias), Shakira Ja’naie Paye (All Day and a Night, Modern Family), and Carl Eberhardt (Rob Peace, Black Christmas). Appearing throughout the series is comedy legend Martin Lawrence (Blue Streak, Big Momma’s House).
“Through his titular character Demascus, Tearrance Chisholm asks one of life’s simplest questions: What does it take to be a good man? And he answers it with some of the most surprising and nuanced revelations one could expect,” said executive producer Mark Johnson (Great American Stories, Better Call Saul) via Deadline. “We thank AMC Studios for sharing our belief in this seriocomic series and Tubi for its steadfast conviction that it belongs on the air.”
Deadline reports that Chisholm shared showrunner responsibilities with The Irrational and American Crime writer Kirk A. Moore. Johnson executive produced via Gran Via Productions along with Myki Bajaj (Logan Lucky, The Holdovers).
Demascus was one of a few canceled projects from the network two years ago. The Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country, Law and Order: Criminal Intent)-led crime drama, 61st Street, was axed ahead of its second season before landing at The CW. And the critically acclaimed sci-fi series Moonhaven’s second season was also canceled, along with an adaptation of Adrienne Celt’s (End of the World House, The Daughters) novel, Invitation to a Bonfire.
