Netflix just released a teaser trailer for the third season of Dear White People, confirming that the series will return this August. The announcement was made in a comedy sketch posted to Netflix’s Youtube channel, in which the cast debate about salty versus sweet grits. Netflix posted the sketch in celebration of Juneteeth, a holiday that commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States.
Back in 2014, director Justin Simiens released an independent feature film Dear White People, which follows the students of a predominantly white Ivy League as they navigate racial politics and personal relationships at their culturally-divided university. Told through the perspectives of mostly African-American characters, Dear White People draws its title from the college radio show of Samantha White (Tessa Thompson), an activist and cultural critic who broadcasts her opinions without apology. The film was adapted for television in 2017, starring Logan Browning as Samantha White and Brandon F. Bell as Troy Fairbanks from the original film. Dear White People season 2 was released on Netflix in May 2018 and was renewed for season 3 in June 2018.
Netflix dropped a teaser for Dear White People season 3 that confirmed an August release date. In the video, Logan Browning and her fellow cast members Marque Richardson, Antoinette Robertson, John Patrick Amedori, Nia Jervier, and DeRon Horton debate about whether grits are better when they are salty or sweet. The teaser does not include any footage from season 3 of Dear White People and ends with referencing the holiday Juneteeth.
Before starring in Dear White People, Logan Browning played Briana Ortiz in Tyler Perry’s series Meet the Browns. Browning also headlined in Netflix’s horror flick, The Perfection, which follows a former violin prodigy and her mentor’s new pupil.
Back in 2017, the trailer for Dear White People elicited an angry response from white people who felt that the satirical show was offensive. Dear White People does not shy away from confronting contemporary racism head-on and has been hailed for tackling timely themes about racial identity.
Dear White People will return to Netflix on August 2nd.
