David Bowie’s Unforgettable Television Performances

It is not everyday that a person becomes a legend, which is one of the many (emphasis on many) reasons why the loss of David Bowie is a heartbreak felt around the world. David Bowie died on Jan. 10 after battling cancer. He was 69. Bowie’s death came mere days after he released a new album.

In his lifetime, Bowie did many things, and writing about this amazing man in the past tense is incredibly hard. Bowie was a singer, songwriter, and an actor, but these words cannot do him justice because he accomplished what few have. Bowie transcended his art, making him the icon and legend we adore and will miss terribly. He is a man who cannot be summed up in a word, several words, or maybe even in words at all.

When he was not making the music he will perhaps be most remembered for, Bowie graced us with his presence on TV. Since nobody can truly embody the essence of David Bowie except for David Bowie, we will let the legend represent himself. Here are some of Bowie’s unforgettable TV performances, not that the man will ever be easily forgotten.

David Bowie appeared in the Twin Peaks TV movie prequel, Fire Walk With Me, in 1992. In this clip, we see him in his role as the “long lost” Phillip Jeffries. It’s weird, like, really weird. But that was Bowie’s signature style.

The Hunger was a British/Canadian horror TV series that focused on stories involving components such as cannibalism, vampires, and murder. David Bowie hosted the second and final season that aired from 1999 to 2000.

As an iconic musician, David Bowie’s career wouldn’t be complete without a performance on Saturday Night Live. On Dec. 15, 1979, Bowie was the musical guest on SNL, and the finale was definitely unforgettable. At the end of “Boys Keep Swinging,” David Bowie’s puppet costume has an intentional malfunction. Like I said, unforgettable.

For this 1977 Christmas special, David Bowie and Bing Crosby took the classic “Little Drummer Boy” and added some new lyrics for the occasion. The performance is amazing, but the added “Peace on Earth” is specific to this TV performance.

David Bowie performed “Life on Mars” and “Ashes to Ashes” in 1980 on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. As Carson goes to introduce Bowie, he can barely get through the rockstar’s music credits due to the audience’s cheering. Classic.

Ricky Gervais is known for thriving on mocking other people, but when David Bowie guest starred on the sitcom Extras, the tables are turned. Bowie performed an impromptu song mocking Gervais’s weight, and needless to say, it’s amazing.

David Bowie was an icon and known for being a little off-beat, but he was also just a guy with a family who shared his daughter’s fascination with the moon. He appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 2002, and the highlight of the interview was when he sang a nursery rhyme as a lullaby.

Rest in peace, David Bowie. You will be missed, but forever loved.
