According to mxdwn, actor John Amos (Good Times, Roots) has passed away, with the media reporting his death on October 1, 2024. While Amos’ passing is recent news to the public, the actor was revealed to have died few months earlier, on August 21, 2024. According to CNN, Amos’ daughter Shannon Amos alleges she learned of her father’s death as the public did, taking in the information as media outlets reported it this October.
In an Instagram post honoring her father, Shannon Amos said, “I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” Shannon Amos wrote in the caption. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.”
Shannon continued by saying, “This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.”
According to CNN, there was tension between Amos’ children about his elderly care, with disagreements occurring between Shannon and her brother, Kelly Christopher Amos. Shannon last year made social media post claiming her father was “a victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation,” reported CNN. During this time, Amos released “a statement via his publicist insisting that he was fine” while hospitalized via CNN.
On October 1, Kelly Christopher Amos announced his father’s death at 84 years old. According to mxdwn, he released the following statement: “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor. My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life…. most recently in Suits LA playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, America’s Dad. He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”
