*spoilers ahead* As the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon came to a close Sunday night, giving way to its fourth and final season, the series’ leading man Norman Reedus (Ballerina, The Boondock Saints) spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the season three finale and what’s next for the perennial zombie franchise.
“We’re getting really close” Reedus told The Hollywood Reporter regarding the ongoing production of Daryl Dixon‘s final season, which is currently filming on location in Spain. “We’re on episode six of season four.”
While this may be the end of the line for Dixon’s story in Europe, the ongoing The Walking Dead: Dead City series, as well as other future projects, could provide another way for the rugged zombie-hunter to return for a new story.
For now though, fans will have to wait and see how Daryl and Carol (Melissa McBride) will escape for home after their latest attempt resulted in failure yet again.
Reedus commented on Dixon’s emotional development in season four, saying “Daryl really goes inside [himself], and so, I’m inside, too. I’m in my head a lot, especially for the episode we’re filming now. It’s filling my head with the future, the past and the present of this character,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
The 15-year Walking Dead veteran also described the spinoff’s creative process, noting that “there’s no season in the future already written when we’re working on the first. It’s created organically as we go along,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “So I would hate to do this show any other way. We organically come up with ideas for storylines as we’re filming,” he added.
Ultimately, Reedus feels that the series is developing a sense of closure. He tells The Hollywood Reporter that “there’s always more story you can tell, but this incarnation of what we’re doing is wrapping up in a perfect way.”
Created by David Zabel (ER, Mercy Street), The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon follows Dixon after he washes ashore in France, where he must partner with his old friend Carol Peletier to return home. Scott Gimple (Chase, Flash Forward) is executive producer, with Skybound Entertainment, Valhalla entertainment, and AMC Studios producing the series.
A release date is yet to be determined.
