Season one of Daredevil: Born Again, as reported by CNET, has now wrapped up. The season ends with a very dramatic, and much more bloody than usual, sequence that sees the vigilantes at a disadvantage. The door seems to be left wide open for the inclusion of many more masked vigilante appearances, and the folks over at IGN would agree.
CNET details how the season builds up to this point. Daredevil, played by English actor Charlie Cox (She-Hulk, Boardwalk Empire), has been officially doxxed, and Kingpin, played by actor Vincent D’Onofrio (Men in Black, Full Metal Jacket), is hot on his trail. After Daredevil’s valiant gesture of taking a bullet for his arch-nemesis leaves his potential assassins scratching their heads, they finally catch up to him. Yet not before the legendary deliverer of street justice, Frank Castle A.K.A. The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Amateur), is called in on a favor to bring in high-powered reinforcement.
The finale sees a clash of ideologies as Daredevil and The Punisher spar, while literally sparring, over acceptable vigilante justice. Matt is firm on his stance that the scumbags should be neutralized with non-lethal force, and sent to his daytime persona to be hit with the full legislative hammer of the law. On the other hand, Castle’s style is that of old school justice, which imbues him as judge, jury, and executioner.
CNET continues to confirm, the season closes with the capture of Frank Castle and the resistance on its heels, as the Kingpin takes his true form as overlord of the city. He effectively outlaws masked vigilantes, a move that sets the narrative for next season, and hopefully even the special presentation of The Punisher, starring who else but big bad Bernthal, that mxdwn previously reported on. A ban on masked vigilantes is potentially a ploy by the studio to bring in cameos from all over the masked vigilante network.
Showrunner Dario Scardapane (Memory, The Bridge) and Disney+ did a great job connecting with Americans who find themselves in a highly divisive and politicized era. Those on the left, and the never Trumpers, could easily see Kingpin ascending, or devolving if you will, into his true authoritarian, fascist, patriarchal role as an evil overbearing leader with far too much power, similar to that of President Trump himself. Still, on the other side of the coin, most of the right and the centrists could see this dictatorship and city-state style environment as relating to that of the sanctuary cities and their leaders, who openly defy the federal government. Either way, whichever side you align with, it’s safe to say that all of the MCU universe fans can rally around how invigorating it is to see two of the best vigilantes in the comic book world team up to take out the baddies. The full season of Daredevil: Born Again is now available on Disney+.
