Michael Price (F is For Family, Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back), the writer and producer of The Simpsons, confirmed Danny Devito’s (The Lorax, Hercules) return to The Simpsons’ cast. According to Comicbook.com, Devito will return as Herb Powell, the long-lost brother of Homer Simpson and the uncle of the main protagonists, Bart and Lisa Simpson.
In an interview with Four Finger Discount, a podcast solely dedicated to The Simpsons, Price hinted at Devito’s return stating that Devito would be “playing a character that he has previously played on the show.” Although Price did not directly confirm that Devito will be playing Herb once more, the only character Devito has played throughout the series is Herb.
Herb last appeared in the season three episode, “Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes?”, which aired over 30 years ago. Since then, Herb has only been shown through flashbacks of other characters. According to CBR.com, Herb will make his return in the season premiere, titled “Bart’s Birthday”.
Season 36 of The Simpsons is set to premiere on September 29, and according to Comicbook.com, Herb Powell will make one or two special appearances throughout the season. In addition, The Simpsons will also cast guest stars Conan O’Brien (SNL, The Tonight Show), John Cena (Fast and Furious 9) and Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump). There is no word as to which characters these three guest stars will be playing or which episodes they will appear in.
The synopsis of The Simpsons is as follows:
“This is an animated sitcom about the antics of a dysfunctional family. Homer is the oafish unhealthy beer loving father, Marge is the hardworking homemaker wife, Bart is the perpetual ten-year-old underachiever (and proud of it), Lisa is the unappreciated eight-year-old genius, and Maggie is the cute, pacifier loving silent infant.”
Future episodes of the show will premiere on FOX, while all previous seasons can be found on Disney+.
