Award-winning Romanian writer and director, Daniel Sandu (One Step Behind the Seraphim, Hackerville), has been greenlit by HBO Europe for his six-part comedy series. Tuff Money, whose Romanian working title is Bani Negri, will be produced by Cristian Mungiu’s Mobra Films (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days).
Tuff Money follows a couple of lovable losers who joke around the thought of committing a “perfect crime.” Soon they find themselves having to actually participate in a robbery after their words get misconstrued. This leads to hilarious antics and the aftermath of the crime – which they are in no way prepared for doing.
For Sandu, his idea for this interesting story stems from reality.
Said Sandu: “I wanted to create a story at the thin line of comedy, a drama about ordinary people who get caught up in incredible situations. If I were to sum up the story of Bani negri in one word, it would be ‘consequences.’ It is about the domino effect of actions triggered by one little innocent joke.”
Sandu has accomplished quite a feat for his 2017 film One Step Behind the Seraphim at the Gopo Awards. The movie was nominated for 15 Gopo Awards and Sandu won eight of those awards including best feature film, director, and screenplay.
Antony Root, the executive VP of original programming and production for HBO Europe, embraces the root of the story and is confident that it will entertain viewers everywhere.
“Tuff Money is a funny and smart caper that is absolutely Romanian at heart, with a sensibility and charm giving it an appeal beyond local audiences,” said Root. “The combination of Daniel’s authored vision and Mobra Films’ internationally renowned excellence make it an exciting addition to our local originals slate.”
Along with Root, Johnathan Young, HBO Europe’s VP, original programming and production, Central Europe, serves as executive producers for Tuff Money.
Shooting for Tuff Money begins next month in Piatra Neamt, Romania. It will then continue to other Romanian cities, Onesti and Bucharest.
