Amidst all the Marvel and Lucasfilm project announcements at Disney’s D23 Expo, fans of the Percy Jackson franchise received an update on the brand new series set for a 2024 release. According to Deadline, Percy Jackson and The Olympians revealed a new teaser trailer at the event. View the video below.
This new adaptation of Rick Riordan’s (Daughter of the Deep, The Lost Hero) fantasy book series will star Walter Scobell in the titular role of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old demigod who is thrust into a daring adventure when Zeus himself accuses the half-blood of stealing his powerful lightning bolts. To restore order to the realm of Olympus, Percy and his two friends must search the country battling supernatural beings to find the missing lightning.
Joining the series opposite Scobell are Leah Sava Jefferies, who will portray Annabeth Chase; and, Aryan Simhadri, who will play Grover Underwood, via Deadline. The previous live-action adaptations of the series were on the silver screen in 2010 and 2013. Hunters’ Logan Lerman played Percy with The White Lotus’ Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth and Lottery Ticket’s Brandon T. Jackson as Grover.
According to Deadline, Riordan co-wrote the pilot with writer and fellow executive producer, Jon Steinberg (Human Target, Jericho). Steinberg will helm the series along with Dan Shotz (Black Sails, See) and James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) is attached to direct. Additional executive producers include Gothan Group’s Jeremy Bell (The Spiderwick Chronicles, Escape Plan), Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (The Maze Runner, Abduction), and D.J. Goldberg (The Factory, Whiteout). They are joined by Monica Owusu-Breen (Alias, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Jim Rowe (Watchmen, Justice League), Bert Salke (Boomtown, Tru Calling), Rebecca Riordan (Sammy), Anders Engström (Taboo, Helstrom), and Jet Wilkinson (First Kill, The Old Man).
Scobell was selected for the role of Percy after starring in Netflix’s hit film, The Adam Project, alongside Ryan Reynolds. He can also be seen co-starring with Owen Wilson in Paramount+’s Secret Headquarters. Jefferies’ latest project was the action thriller, Beast, directed by Will Packer and starring Idris Elba. She also appeared in the short-lived sitcom, Rel, starring Get Out’s Lil’ Rel Howery. Simhadri’s credits include Disney’s 2022 remake of Cheaper by the Dozen and 2020’s The Main Event.
