Two big stars of Netflix’s former Marvel Universe finally reunited on the D23 Expo stage this past Saturday. Daredevil’s Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio accompanied Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to announce the latest updates on the upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again. The series is set for a 2024 premiere.
The series’s official order was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, following both Cox and D’Onofrio’s proper return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. D’Onofrio reprised his role as Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin in the Disney+ series, Hawkeye. Cox returned as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Murdock will appear again in an upcoming episode of She-Hulk, currently streaming every Thursday.
Along with displaying a brand new logo for the anticipated series, Cox confirmed the series will be a total reboot of the Daredevil story, according to Comicbook. That means the events of Netflix’s third season of Daredevil and The Defenders will be wiped as the character will be reintroduced from scratch.
“It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing,” Cox explained to extraTV. “Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently.” We already know a few changes to the characters as seen in previous projects. For starters, Daredevil himself may be sporting a very different outfit, given his brief cameo in the She-Hulk mid-season trailer. The Hell’s Kitchen hero was seen sporting his yellow hero costume, one pulled directly from the comics.
Kingpin may look different as well as D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk was noted to have survived his near-fatal encounter with his adopted daughter, Echo, in the final scene in Hawkeye. Both Murdock and D’Onofrio are scheduled to appear in the spinoff series starring newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.
Cox explained his excitement about returning to the character after such a long hiatus.
“I love it. I’ve loved every minute of it,” Cox explained to Comicbook in previous interview. “And right now I’m just buzzing that it’s kind of happening again, it’s starting up again. And I don’t know where it’s going, I don’t know how much involvement I’m going to have, I don’t know what it’s leading to, but it feels like we’re born again. And so I feel like I’m getting a second chance at the dream job that has… I refer to it as, ‘There’s the gift that keeps on giving.'”
All three seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil and the limited series, The Defenders, are available to stream on Disney+.
