The wealthy and mysterious Mr Lodge is coming back to Riverdale… and he may be portrayed by Mark Consuelos.
According to ET Online, Consuelos is set to play Hiram Lodge in season 2. CW’s hit series Riverdale, based off of the iconic Archie comics, was renewed for a second season last month. Consuelos’ role is dependent on whether or not Fox’s series Pitch is picked up for a second season, given that he has a lead role in that series, and would be required to stay with the show. On Pitch, he plays Oscar Arguella, the San Diego Padres general manager. If he does get to take the role of Riverdale, he will be a season regular.
The official description of Mr. Hiram Lodge, according to show, is “a ruthless, handsome, charismatic businessman who is coming back to Riverdale after weathering a financial scandal that almost destroyed him. He is there to reconnect with his wife Hermione (Marisol Nichols) and, especially, his daughter Veronica (Camila Mendes), who is the apple of his eye.” We know from this first season that his wife is originally from Riverdale, so Mr. Lodge may be as well.
This isn’t the first time they’re brought in someone awesome to portray a parent. Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210) has played Archie’s father Fred Andrews. Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink) will be joining the end of season 1 as Archie’s mom Nancy Andrews.
The series stars K.J. Apa (Archie), Camila Mendes (Veronica), Lili Reinhart (Betty), Cole Sprouse (Jughead), and Madelaine Petsch and Ashleigh Murray (Cheryl and Josie).
It is no surprise that the teen drama has found success. Creator Robert Aguirre-Sacasa has not only worked on series such as Fox’s Glee and CBS’ Supergirl, but is currently the Chief Creation Officer of Archie Comics. One of his first plays back in 2003, after studying playwriting at Yale School of Drama, was a gay reimagining of Archie and his friends (which ironically, was given cease and desist order by Archie comics, who were unhappy with how their brand was being portrayed). Aguirre-Sacasa is also still signed on with Warner Bros for a feature film called Archie, but the development is unknown.
Consuelos is most well-known for starring on soap opera All My Children as Mateo Santos Sr. from 1995 -2010, where he met his wife talk show host Kelly Ripa in his first year. He has made appearances on shows such as ABC’s Ugly Betty, NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, USA’s Queen of the South, and FX’s American Horror Story.
