The CW had its upfront presentation this week and in typical fashion, highlighted the Arrowverse crossover taking place in the upcoming season. This arc story usually spans their four DC shows of The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. In a stroke of programming genius, the shows will air on four consecutive nights, Sunday through Thursday.
This year’s presentation included the announcement of a new superhero, Batwoman. CW President Mark Pedowitz shared the news that not only will the character debut on the small screen but also the city of Gotham, “This is the first time ever that Batwoman will make a live-action appearance on any screen.”
Batwoman has been a prominent character in several comic and animated iterations. She debuted in 1956 as a love interest for Batman in Detective Comics #233 but was removed from the universe only to re-emerge 50 years later in 2006. The later version was introduced at Kate Kane who assumed bat-duties when Batman took a hiatus after Infinite Crisis in 2005.
Some amateurs may argue about her appearance on-screen as the character portrayed by Yvonne Craig in the 1960s Batman show. However, that was actually Batgirl, aka, Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon and quiet neighborhood librarian who was a potential love interest for Bruce Wayne. Unfortunately, Batgirl only got to see one season as the show was cancelled after her debut.
The Arrowverse had also announced earlier this year they were adding John Constantine as a permanent cast member on Legends of Tomorrow. Hopefully the same rings true for Batwoman if her storyline can progress. This latest crossover it scheduled to be seen in December.
