Veronica Lodge, portrayed by the actress Camila Mendes (Dangerous Lies) in The CW teen melodrama Riverdale, has found a husband as reported by Entertainment Weekly. The series cast Chris Mason (Broadchurch) as her future husband Chad Gekko, who will appear in the upcoming fifth season.
The CW series, which is based on the teen characters from the iconic Archie Comics, is now leaping into the future for season five. Said to be set seven years in the future, they’re leaving behind their textbooks and lockers for good. While the first three episodes of the new season will pick off where season four left off, the rest of the season will be set in a future world where the teens of Riverdale are now adults.
Season five will depict Veronica adjusting to married life, but in true Riverdale fashion her husband is not without flaws. Her husband, Gekko, is described by Entertainment Weekly as a wall street tycoon and controlling husband who become envious of Veronica’s friendship with her ex-boyfriend Archie.
Along with Mendes, the series stars KJ Apa (I Still Believe) as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart (Hustlers) as Betty Cooper, and Cole Sprouse (Five Feet Apart) as Jughead Jones. Living in the town of Riverdale which is riddled with crime and murder, they sleuth and solve mysteries by night and attend Riverdale High School by day.
Deciding to move the series years into the future is a major change to a show that is known as a teen drama. The decision to do a time jump comes from the series creator, writer, and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). Reinhart spoke to Jimmy Fallon (Fever Pitch) on The Tonight Show this past August about the time jump, sharing her excitement of no longer having to play a teenager. She told Fallon: “Season five we’re actually doing I believe a seven year time jump into the future. And we’re not gonna be teenagers anymore… I’m psyched about it, I’m really psyched about. I think it’ll be nice to play an adult.”
Forced to stop filming in March 2020 due to COVID-19, production for the remainder of season four and the beginning of season five resumed in September. Riverdale season five will premiere on the CW January 20 with the episode “Chapter Seventy Six: Killing Mr.Honey,” at 7 P.M E.T.
