The day is set for the return of Hollywood’s most famous muppets. Disney+ released the official trailer for The Muppet Show, a special event celebrating 50 years of the iconic variety show. The program premieres February 4 on Disney+ and ABC. View the exciting trailer below.
The minute-long trailer reunites us with classic characters — the all-time host, Kermit the Frog; failed comic Fozzy the Bear; stuntman Gonzo; and the prima donna herself, Miss Piggy. They are joined by the entire muppet ensemble, along with special guests Sabrina Carpenter (Manchild, “Please, Please, Please“), producer Seth Rogen (The Studio, Platonic) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live, Loot).
According to the press release, The Muppet Show premiered in 1976 and ran until 1981. Jim Henson’s creation saw a who’s who of talent grace the stage, including Diana Ross (“Upside Down“, The Boss), Debbie Harry (“Rapture”, “Heart of Glass”), Elton John (“Benny & the Jets”, “Candle in the Wind”), Johnny Cash (The Hunted, Stagecoach), Gladys Knight (“Neither One of Us”, “Love Overboard”), Liza Minelli (Arrested Development, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) and Paul Simon (The Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water) . Across five seasons, the show earned numerous awards, from the Grammys and Emmys, to BAFTA and Peabody.
In addition to Rogen, the special event is executive produced by director Alex Timbers (Mozart in the Jungle, John Mulaney: Baby J), Evan Goldberg (This Is the End, 50/50), Alex McAtee (An American Pickle, Game Over, Man!) and James Weaver (Good Boys, The Disaster Artist). They are jointed by The Muppets Studio’s Michael Steinbach, Leigh Slaughter (The Muppets Mayhem, Muppet Babies) and David Lightbody (Muppets Haunted Mansion, Folio). Carpenter, Albertina Rizzo (American Auto, Shining Vale), Matt Vogel (Sesame Street, Muppets Now) and Eric Jacobson (Muppets Most Wanted, The Muppets) are also EPs.
The majority of the muppet cast will be performed by veteran puppeteers Bill Barretta (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Muppets Take the 02), Dave Goelz (Fraggle Rock, Muppet Treasure Island), Jacobson, Peter Linz (Bear in the Big Blue House, The Puzzle Place), David Rudman (Donkey Hodie, Emo and Mark Rober’s Merry Giftmas) and Vogel. Goelz celebrates the 50th anniversary as an original Muppets Show performer, originating characters Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, and others.
Tune in for a historic night of television on February 4 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. The event will be available to stream on Disney+ at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET. And stream all original seasons of The Muppet Show on Disney+.
