According to Deadline, the anime streaming service Crunchyroll has just surpassed 17 million subscribers, and parent company Sony plans to continue to supercharge the service’s growth. Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini recently discussed this growth and excited fans with the news of a Ghost of Tsushima anime series.

Sony stated during a corporate strategy presentation, “Amid the anticipated continued growth of the anime market, Sony plans to accelerate Crunchyroll’s growth,” via Deadline. Some of these plans include broadening Crunchyroll’s scope to include more mobile games and merchandising. Crunchyroll currently offers a host of mobile games as well as over 50,000 anime episodes localized in a dozen languages.

Crunchyroll has recently been enjoying massive success with the release of the second season of the smash hit anime series Solo Leveling. The service also has plans to stream the popular Demon Slayer movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, following its theatrical release, according to Deadline.

Sony also stated via Deadline that, “Anime is a key driver of growth for Sony Group. Building on the success of Aniplex and Crunchyroll, Sony is advancing initiatives to expand its reach in anime and strengthen content development.” Some of these initiatives include the founding of anime label Hayate, Sony’s collaboration with Kadokawa, and plans for more seamless integration of the streaming service on PS5, making it even easier for users to access.

The announcement of a Ghost of Tsushima anime series is also part of this growth strategy. The Sucker Punch-produced game is wildly successful, selling over 13 million copies and an anime tie-in is sure to make a splash with gamers and anime fans alike.

The Ghost of Tsushima series is reportedly already in the works, though there is currently no official trailer or release date for the Crunchyroll product as of yet.
