A big win for fans of the iconic “Green Yuri,” as Crunchyroll has announced an official January 2027 estimated premiere date for the anime adaptation of The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All. The reveal came in time for this year’s Anime Expo, and was released during the Crunchyroll Showcase panel.
The adaptation was first announced in 2025 by writer and illustrator Sumiko Arai via X (formerly Twitter), coinciding with the release of the series’ third volume. As it was revealed, the series is set to be produced by animation studio CloverWorks – with Rino Yamasaki (Akebi’s Sailor Uniform, Darling in the Franxx) on series composition, Masashi Ishihama (Spy x Family, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) as director, and Kanna Hirayama (Oshi No Ko, Rent-a-Girlfriend) working on character design. The title characters will be voiced by Akari Kito (Classroom of the Elite, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba) as Aya Oosawa and Mariya Ise (Hunter x Hunter, Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler) as Mitsuki Koga. Prior, both had voiced the characters in a drama CD adaptation, released in April 2024.

Originally a digital short story published on social media, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All has been in print and serialized online since 2023, with a total of four volumes published in Japan to date. Known for its striking black-and-white detailed illustrations with a distinct green accent color, the series has become colloquially known by international audiences as “Green Yuri,” (Yuri referring to the Girls’ Love/GL genre) finding widespread critical and commercial success since its serialization. It won the 9th Next Manga Award in 2023 for the web manga category and Best New Manga at the 2nd American Manga Awards in 2025.
The series follows the story of Aya and Mitsuki through their first meeting, budding relationship, and staying true to oneself and identity – Via its official English publisher, YenPress, a story description for the first volume of the series:
“Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop. Dressed in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him–not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?”
As stated prior, the anime adaptation of The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All will premiere and stream on Crunchyroll in January 2027.
