According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crunchyroll confirmed that Kaiju No. 8 will have second season. Soon after the season one finale on Saturday, Crunchyroll announced that Production I.G., which has produced titles like Terminator Zero and Vampire in the Garden, had already started production for season two. Furthermore, Crunchyroll will stream the new season globally in over 200 countries once it is ready, though the exact release schedule will be announced later.
The action series Kaiju No. 8 is based on the original manga written by Naoya Matsumoto (Pochi Kuro, Neko Wappa!). Animated by Production I.G, the show features kaiju artwork and design overseen by Studio Khara, which has produced titles such as The Diary of Ochibi-san and Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. Shigeyuki Miya (Afterlost: Where I End and You Begin, Onihei) and Tomomi Kamiya (Mob Psycho 100, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya) serve as co-directors, while Ichirô Ôkouchi (Spy x Family, Lupin Zero) handles composition and script writing.
The official English synopsis of the show reads as follows: “In a world plagued by creatures known as Kaiju, Kafka Hibino aspired to enlist in The Defense Force. He makes a promise to enlist with his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro. Soon, life takes them in separate ways. While employed cleaning up after Kaiju battles, Kafka meets Reno Ichikawa. Reno’s determination to join The Defense Force reawakens Kafka’s promise to join Mina and protect humanity.”
Tetsuya Nishio (Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, The Cat Returns) serves as chief animation director and character designer for the second season of Kaiju No. 8, with additional staff including Mahiro Maeda (One Punch Man, Kill Bill: Vol. 1) for Kaiju design; Shinji Kimura (Blue Exorcist: The Movie, Dorohedoro) for art direction; Eiji Arai (Fena: Pirate Princess, Kuroko’s Basketball) for cinematography; Aya Hida (Attack on Titan, Fruits Basket) for editing and Yûta Bandoh (Belle, Towako Omameda and Her Three Ex-husbands) for music composition. YUNGBLUD (parents, Hated) performs the opening song “Abyss,” and OneRepublic (I Ain’t Worried, Counting Stars) performs the ending song “Nobody.”
