Netflix has secured another high‑profile literary adaptation, giving a straight‑to‑series order to The Corrections, a limited drama based on Jonathan Franzen’s bestselling 2001 novel. According to Deadline, the streamer won the project in a competitive bidding situation, with three‑time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (Don’t Look Up, Big Little Lies) set to star as Enid Lambert. Franzen is adapting his own book for television, while Oscar‑winning filmmaker Cord Jefferson (American Fiction, Watchmen) will direct every episode of the series.
As Deadline reports, the project marks a significant addition to Netflix’s prestige drama slate, which is overseen by VP Nora Skinner. Building out this tier of programming has been a priority for the streamer under Head of UCAN Scripted Series Jinny Howe, who recruited Skinner from HBO in 2024. The Corrections joins a roster of competitive acquisitions that includes Rabbit, Rabbit starring Adam Driver and Enigma Variations led by Aaron Taylor‑Johnson, both of which Deadline previously covered.
Based on Franzen’s National Book Award–winning novel, The Corrections follows a Midwestern family whose three adult children struggle to navigate their own unraveling lives while resisting their mother’s plea for one final Christmas together. Deadline notes that Streep will portray Enid, the family matriarch whose determination to reunite her children sets the story in motion. The series marks her third lead role in a limited series, following acclaimed turns in Holocaust and Angels in America.
Per Deadline, Jefferson will executive produce alongside Franzen, Mark Roybal (Task, Mare of Easttown), Paul Lee (Task, The Summer I Turned Pretty), and former Paramount TV Studios President Nicole Clemens (Sexy Beast, Shantaram). The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios, which recently restructured following the Skydance–Paramount Global merger and continues to supply projects to Netflix and other platforms.
In its coverage, Deadline highlights that Netflix outbid multiple competitors for the project, including Paramount+, reversing the dynamic from recent bidding wars. With Streep attached and Jefferson directing, The Corrections is positioned as one of Netflix’s most anticipated prestige dramas in development, reinforcing the streamer’s strategy of securing high‑profile literary adaptations.
