Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat, Hustlers) has spoken positively about the “really funny” Crazy Rich Asians sequel script that’s in the works over at HBO. Speaking to Today, the actress confirmed she had read a script for the series and found it to be delightful.
“Well, I mean, the first movie is based on the book by Kevin Kwan,” Wu said. “And he actually has a whole bunch of books in the Crazy Rich Asians world, and so a lot of it follows that. I could tell you that we’re all excited to be coming back. It’s filming here in New York where I live, so I’m thrilled about that. And I think it’s really funny.” Wu continued, “It’s very funny. I think it’s really good.”
In addition to praising the script and confirming that filming would take place in New York City, she also praised the film’s co-writer, Adele Lim (Raya and the Last Dragon, Joy Ride), who is currently writing the sequel series. Wu explained, “We’re in great hands because Adele is showrunning and writing, and she did the original [film], and she’s just so smart and good and talented that I feel just great with her at the helm.”
The Crazy Rich Asians sequel series was greenlit earlier this month by HBO, and several main cast members are expected to return from the 2018 original film. In addition to Wu returning as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding (Last Christmas, A Simple Favor) is expected to return as Nick Young. Meanwhile, Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Wicked) is also expected to return as Nick’s imperious mother, Eleanor Sung-Young, and Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show, King of the Hill) is expected to return as Eddie Chang. Any other returning cast members are unknown at this time. Production on the series is expected to start sometime in 2027.
