For television, Love, Death + Robots started the night strongly, winning the first two awards of the night. The series won one more later in the night, bringing its total to three. The series now has 11 Annie Awards, alongside an astonishing 17 Emmys. The series wins were in storyboarding, character design, and production design.
Love, Death + Robots is a genre-bending anthology series from Netflix. Each episode tells a new story spanning horror, science fiction, fantasy, and comedy. Now in its fourth season, the series was created by acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher (Zodiac, Mindhunter) and Tim Miller (Deadpool, Borderlands).
Deadline has reported that the other two big winners of the night were Common Side Effects and Win Or Lose, which both tied Love, Death, + Robots with three wins.
Common Side Effects is dark comedy series for Adult Swim. The film is a biting social critique of the pharmaceutical industry that blends surrealist imagery into its narrative. The show was created by Joseph Bennet (Scavengers Reign, Haha, You Clowns) and Steve Hely (30 Rock, The Office). The series was awarded for its first season, and according to mxdwn, it has been renewed for a second.
Deadline has Win Or Lose as Pixar’s first attempt at a longer format, planned as a limited series. The series is the only one of the three previously mentioned series targeted mostly at children and teens. It follows a middle school softball team in the days leading up to their championship game. Each episode is told from a different character’s perspective.
The Annie Awards began presenting awards in 1972 and honor achievement in animation. According to Deadline, other series honored include Bob’s Burgers and Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball.
