Roughly three years after acquiring the right, FX finally followed and ordered pilot for Pia Guerra and Brian K. Vaughn’s comic book series Y: The Last Man. Michael Green (American Gods) had already been slated to helm the project as showrunner. FX released a teaser about the show as, “All of the men are dead. But one. Y traverses a world of women — exploring gender, race, class and survival.”
The DC comic follows a Yorick Brown and his monkey sidekick, Ampersand, as they survive in a plague ridden world that has eliminated everyone with a Y chromosome. The 60-issue comic was released in 2002 under the Vertigo imprint.
In addition to American Gods, Green had recently co-written screenplays for Blade Runner 2049 and Logan. Serving as co-showrunner is Aida Mashaka Croul who has served as part of the Jessica Jones and Nick Cage Marvel shows.
Author Vaughn will also be part of the show as an executive producer. He is not new to the television scene has he was previously connected to Lost and Under the Dome. As for Y, he was keeping an open mind and “wanted to find someone who loved the source material but didn’t feel so indebted to it that they would be afraid to change it.”
This led to connection Green to the project, especially given his interpretation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods series. Several stars have been fans of the series including Zachary Levi, Joss Whedon, and Elijah Wood who has expressed interest in starring.
