Comic Book Based Series ‘What If’ Developed by Kevin Feige Reportedly Coming to Disney Plus

Think about every important thing that has taken place within the Marvel Universe. Think about what caused those events and what became the result soon after. Now, imagine if it was all done differently. Back in 1977, Marvel Comics started to publish a comic book series called What If. The comics explored an almost alternative universe to the way certain events could have been handled. Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios will oversee the animated series for Disney’s new streaming service coming later this year, Disney+.

The animated series could bring in some big name Marvel stars to reprise their roles, although, it has not been confirmed. Scheduling wise, it would be easier for cast members to come in and provide their voice for an episode. It’s a much simpler concept than that of a live-action show.

The episodes will have nothing to do with the current Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline and its storylines. With over 200 comic book issues, many of the storylines are theories created by fans and comic book writers. Each episode would explore different outcomes with different characters. Below are a few examples of theories taken from the What If comic books:

“What if Captain America hadn’t vanished during World War II?”

“What if Spider-Man didn’t become a crimefighter?”

“What if Thanos joined the Avengers?”

These will surely be an interesting way of bringing the theories to life on-screen. In a past interview, Kevin Feige discussed how with Disney+ and the MCU collaborating on different projects, comic book fans can expect to see more of their favorite superheroes and villains on the streaming site.

“So it’s pretty exciting to be 10 plus years into the MCU and have an entirely new outlet to tell stories with new characters, with existing characters,” said Feige. “And the way we like to do nineties action movie, political thrillers, heist movies, you hear us talk about this all the time, and now we get to do play with a medium even more in a multi-episode arc, which we’re excited about.”

No further information has been given regarding production dates, a premiere date, and casting for What If.
