Netflix is partnering up with comedian Iliza Shlesinger to produce sketch series that will hit the streaming service next year. The series, which will be known simply as The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show, has been green lit for a six episode first season. The show’s official logline reads, “From the mind of Iliza Shlesinger comes a secret world filled with absurd characters, insight into the female experience, and irreverent yet poignant social commentary.”
Shlesinger has been a presence on Netflix since her first special War Paint debuted on the platform in 2013. In the years since, she has released three other specials (Freezing Hot, Confirmed Kills, and Elder Millennial) on the streaming service. She is set to release a fifth on Netflix later this year. In addition to performing in these specials and The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show, she is set to co-star in Netflix’s upcoming film Wonderland alongside Mark Wahlberg.
The sketch series is set to begin filming in New York this fall. Shlesinger is set to executive produce alongside Kim Gamble, Kara Baker, David Martin, Richard Allen-Turner, and Jon Thoday. The production company behind the series will be Avalon Television, which also produces Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for HBO. Laura Murphy, whose past credits include Girl Code and Last Week Tonight, will direct all six episodes.
Netflix already has some experience in the world of sketch comedy. In 2015, it released W/ Bob and David, a series from Mr. Show duo Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. The following year, it added another sketch show: Netflix Presents: The Characters. This year, the streamer released I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, which has been renewed for a second season. Joining The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show as a freshman sketch series is Astronomy Club, which stars an improv troupe of the same name. That show does not yet have a release date.
The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2020.
