During President Trump’s first 100 days, the Commander-in-Chief has aimed at institutions and companies with established programs focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The latest company to receive pressure is Comcast and NBCUniversal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the media company received a letter from current FCC Chair Brendan Carr notifying them of a forthcoming investigation into the company’s DEI guidelines.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Comcast has a statement on their corporate website that details their DEI efforts: “We believe that a diverse, equitable, and inclusive company is a more innovative and successful one. Across our workforce, products, and content, we embrace diversity of background, perspective, culture, and experience, and together with our partners, we are working to fight injustice against any race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, disability, or veteran status.”
The current owner of NBC, Bravo, E!, and Peacock is only the latest entertainment entity pressured to succumb to Trump’s anti-DEI campaign. PBS closed its DEI office as it prepares for an FCC investigation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And NPR is next on Chair Carr’s list, as both entities receive government funding. The FCC extinguished its own DEI programs in January with Carr stating, “Promoting invidious forms of discrimination runs contrary to the Communications Act and deprives Americans of their right to fair and equal treatment under the law. It also represents a wasteful expenditure of taxpayer resources.”
In addition to NBC and PBS, the anti-DEI wave has impacted other entertainment companies. THR reports Amazon announced its rollback of DEI efforts today, following the erasure of its inclusion playbook last September. Under their DEI efforts, the company aimed to have more diverse-led series and films, promote more women and minority members to positions and bid to more women and minority-led businesses for production work. Earlier this week, Disney issued a letter to employees announcing a pivot from promoting underrepresented talent within. Instead, their efforts will bolster a program hiring military veterans.
