Cobie Smulders (The Avengers, How I Met Your Mother), Marvel veteran, finally speaks up about shocking moment in the series Secret Invasion. Smulders talks the ending of the series premiere with The Hollywood Reporter and her shock to how it stayed a secret until the public reveal.
Marvel ventured into television thanks to the help of Disney, Marvel claims they wanted to be able to delve deeper into the development of their characters. Unfortunately, Smulders’ beloved character in Secret Invasion, Maria Hill, does not get the privilege of prolonged character development.
The former SHIELD agent met her end in the series premiere titled “Resurrection.” While the loss of Maria Hill will be mourned, Smulders is taking her exit from the MCU with pride, claiming that “this has been an amazing run. What a dream job… on paper, the credits are great, but… every production I’ve done has been an absolute blast with amazing people. So I really don’t have anything to complain about.”
One of the major things Smulders mentioned is that she is extremely shocked that the loss of Maria Hill was not leaked long before the premiere. Smulders says that “there were a lot of people around, so I’m surprised that there wasn’t an image that got leaked. I guess that’s the respect that Marvel has earned over the last decade, which is like, ‘Don’t spoil it for people.’ And nobody did, thankfully.”
What came as all the more shocking was who actually pulled the trigger to execute Hill. Kingsley Ben-Adir’s (Peaky Blinders, Barbie) character, Gravik, shapeshifts into Nick Fury’s form to commit the heinous act. Fortunately, the real Nick Fury appeared just in time for Hill and Fury to have an emotional final goodbye.
Smulders told The Hollywood Reporter that “it was strange and kind of dark, wasn’t it? It was kind of weird on the day, because that very violent moment was followed by a very emotional moment that Sam and I got to share… so I focused more on that last moment than the darkness of him actually doing that [as Skrull imposter Fury].”
While the loss of Maria Hill will be mourned, the exit of Smulders in Secret Invasion will also have a great impact on viewers. To catch the rest of the series, it airs on Disney+ on Wednesdays.
