In an exclusive, according to Deadline, the creative team for the upcoming Big Bang Theory spinoff on Max is now confirmed. Chuck Lorre, co-creator of The Big Bang Theory and its spinoffs, was previously the only announced member of the team.
Lorre has teamed up with screenwriter Zak Penn (The Avengers, Ready Player One) and Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady. The trio are co-writing the script and will executively produce the series, produced by Warner Bros. TV, where Lorre is based.
Penn, an unexpected choice for the single-camera comedy due to his lack of sitcom experience, but he could also bring valuable insight from his strong genre background, including in comic books. Deadline reports that most Big Bang characters, including Kevin Sussman of (Weeds) who plays Stuart Bloom, share a passion for comics. Stuart’s comic bookstore is rumored to be central to the new series.
Lorre and Prady reunite for their first major collaboration since The Big Bang Theory. Prady previously worked as a consulting producer on Young Sheldon, a spinoff of the original series.
According to Deadline Sussman, Posehn, and Lapkus joined the Big Bang spinoff after signing talent-holding deals with Warner Bros. Television in October.
On The Big Bang Theory, Lapkus portrayed the comic book store’s quirky assistant manager, later becoming Stuart’s girlfriend. Posehn played geologist and guitar enthusiast Bert Kibbler.
The Big Bang Theory debuted in 2007, becoming the No. 1 comedy on TV until its 2019 conclusion, with 279 episodes across 12 seasons. Like Young Sheldon and Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, the new Max series is from Chuck Lorre Productions and WBTV.
